Virtual tour about Russian military history of the beginning of XIX century is available on Presidential Library's portal

27 April 2024

A virtual tour of the exhibition of the Military Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineering and Communications Troops When Finland became Russian is posted on the portal of the Presidential Library. This is a new joint project of the Library and the Museum.

The exhibition is dedicated to a half–forgotten episode of Russian military history - the Russo-Swedish War of 1808-1809, which ended with the victory of Russia and the conclusion of the Friedrichsham Peace Treaty. According to it, Finland passed from Sweden to Russia, and this vast territory became part of the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland.

Through a virtual tour of the exhibition When Finland became Russian weapons used in Russo-Swedish war can be explored. Those are domestic jaeger rifles and fusees, cuirassier pistols and carbines, non-commissioned officer rifles, cavalry swords and dragoon sabers, soldier infantry cleavers, as well as similar Swedish–made weapons - pistols, accessories, rifles, sabers and broadswords.

The exhibition also presents memorial items, for example, an officer's sword of the 1798 model, which belonged to Graf Pavel Stroganov, who participated in the famous ice crossing to the Aland Islands under the leadership of Bagration.

Another interesting exhibit is the barrel of an artillery piece, an 8–pound (102 mm caliber) so-called unicorn. Sweds seized Russian cannon in 1788 in the Battle of Svenkzund during the war of 1788-1790, and during the Russo-Swedish War of 1808-1809, Russian troops regained the cannon during the capture of the fortress of Sveaborg.

The exhibition also presents military uniforms and equipment of representatives of the armies of the opposing sides, insignia, awards, rare printed publications and archival documents.

The exhibition is decorated with paintings and graphics. Portraits of participants of those events are definetly interesting.

Virtual projects are an actively developing field of activity of the Presidential Library, through which unique materials become available to a wide audience. Virtual tours and excursions are available on the portal of the Presidential Library in the section Exhibitions at the link https://www.prlib.ru/about_exhibition.
