The Presidential Library and the Museum of Electrical Public Transportation call for a media tour in horror of the 110th anniversary of electric tram traffic on the St. Petersburg’s streets

5 July 2017

Shortly before the 110th anniversary of the beginning of electric tram traffic in St. Petersburg, on July 5, 2017, at 12 pm the Presidential Library and the Museum of Electrical Public Transportations invite press for a media tour. The event will take place on the territory of the tram depot on Vasilyevsky Island, where on September 29, 1907, for the first time, en-route tram traffic began, following in direction of Senate Square, where the historical building of the Most Holy Governing Synod accommodates today the premises of the Presidential Library.

Director of the “Gorelectrotrans” St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise Vasily Andreevich Ostryakov, Director of the Museum of Electrical Public Transportations Kirill Antonovich Nyukvist, Deputy Director General of the Presidential Library Valentin Valentinovich Sidorin plan to participate in the media tour.

During the event, an official ceremony of exchange of cooperation agreements between the “Gorelectrotrans” St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise and the Presidential Library, and also unique historical materials on the history of the tramway movement from the funds of the Presidential Library will be handed to the Museum of Electrical Public Transportations. In addition, the participants of the event will get a chance to immerse themselves in history, being the passengers of a retro tram that will follow along one of the routes of Vasilyevsky Island.

The history of the development of the city tram is broadly represented in the Presidential Library stock, which currently numbers more than 550,000 entries. So, for example, an electronic copy of the 1904-year “Project of the Adaptation of St. Petersburg Railways to Electric Traction” tells how the future network of public railway transportations was developed; “Tram estimates and blueprints. 1912” give an idea of how a new type of public transportations was gradually introduced to the city streets; electronic copies of maps of tramways of different years show how the tram network grew and expanded.
