23 July 2024

On July 18th, 2024, the Russian Cultural Center in Beijing will host the grand opening of the exhibition Bouquet of Peaks: The Great Mountains of the World, organized by the Russian Geographical Society. The exhibition features portraits of 14 of the highest peaks on our planet, showcasing the beauty and diversity of mountain landscapes.

This exhibition is part of the ongoing project Russian Heritage of the Himalayas: Continuation of the Path, which began in 2015 and aims to preserve and promote the legacy of Russian explorers, artists, and scientists who have explored the Himalayan mountains. Through this project, participants conduct scientific research, gather ethnographic materials for the Russian Geographical Society's museum collections, and organize conferences and meetings in Bhutan, Nepal, India, China, and Pakistan.

The author of the exhibition is Sergey Dudko, a traveler, honored artist of Russia, member of the Russian Geographical Society, and expert council member of the National Award "Crystal Compass". Art historians have compared him to Nicholas Roerich, as he has painted mountains for half a century. For more than 40 years, the artist has been climbing mountains, having been a master of sports in the USSR and an international-class instructor. He has also been a first-class lifesaver, rescuing climbers from snowy captivity in Adygea, North Ossetia, Georgia, Karachay-Cherkessia, and Kabardino-Balkaria.

At the opening of the exhibition at the Russian Cultural Center in Beijing, there was a screening of the documentary film "Russian Himalayas: Walking in the Clouds". Together with the modern expedition of the Russian Geographical Society, viewers followed in the footsteps of the first Russian explorers of the "Roof of the World" - Nikolai Przhevalsky, Philip Efremov, Peter Kozlov, Bronislav Gromchevsky, and Gombozhap Tsybikov, as well as Ovshe Norzunov. They saw how Sergei Dudko conducted high-altitude painting sessions.

The director of "Russian Himalayas" is Vladimir Shuvannikov, a well-known Russian documentary filmmaker and winner of the Crystal Compass National Award. The film was shot in Russia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, and China. The Presidential Library pays great attention to the history of international relations.

The digital collection of documents titled Russia – China: the History of Relations is available on the institution's portal from anywhere in the world.
