The Presidential Library marking the 195th anniversary of the birth of geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky

On January 18, 2022, 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library will host a video lecture marking the 195th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian scientist and geographer Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky as part of the Knowledge of Russia project.

The video lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library's portal in Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events and on the institution's YouTube channel.

At the video lecture, Kirill Valentinovich Chistyakov, Vice President of the Russian Geographical Society and Chairman of its St. Petersburg City Branch, will highlight the scientist's contribution to the foundations of modern geography. At one time, Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky was an active member and vice-chairman of the Society.

Lyudmila Valerievna Frolova, an employee of the Scientific and Educational Department of the State Hermitage, will reveal the collection talent of the famous traveler focusing on the collection of paintings by Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky in the Hermitage collection, numbering about seven hundred works of the Dutch and Flemish schools of the 16th-17th centuries. It found a place for the works of famous masters and rare things that attract the attention of sophisticated connoisseurs.

Thanks to the speech of Alexander Alexandrovich Bogdanov, a researcher at the Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky Museum-Estate, the audience will learn about the previously unknown details of the history of joining the title "Tyan-Shansky" to the name of the great geographer and learn about the choice between the options "Tyan-Shansky" and "Khan-Tengry".

Modern expeditions, passing along the travel routes of Pyotr Petrovich Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, will be presented to the participants of the video lecture by a researcher at the Ryazan Museum of Travelers, a member of the Ryazan branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Nikolai Semyonovich Popov, and the great-grandson of the geographer, Alexander Vladimirovich Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky.

One has opportunity to learn more about the scientist and the traveler from the materials of the new digital collection of the Presidential Library Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky (1827–1914). It includes his memoirs and scientific research, archival documents about official activities, video recordings, visual materials.

The Presidential Library regularly holds interactive lessons and video lectures, which can be found on the institution's portal in the "Multimedia Lessons" section and in the "Video lecture hall for school" section, as well as on the Presidential Library's YouTube channel, which presents recordings of past lectures and open lessons.

Entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: for media representatives - through entrance № 2, participants and guests of the event - through entrance № 1.
