The Presidential Library to tell about the hacking of the Manhattan Project

20 February 2024

As part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia, the Presidential Library continues a series of lectures devoted to the history of the state security agencies of Russia.

The events will focus on the main areas of work of the special services, the specifics of professional activities, the most interesting and significant operations and outstanding employees. Recordings of the first four lectures of the series are available on the Rutube-channel of the Presidential Library.

On February 20, 2024 at 16:00 (Moscow time) there will be held a lecture “Hacking the Manhattan Project and the role of the Cambridge Five in this project”. Listeners will be told about the unique strategy of the political intelligence of the NKVD-NKGB to penetrate Soviet agents into the British and US project to develop an atomic bomb, which allowed Soviet scientists to reduce time and save money when creating their own atomic (and then nuclear) weapons.

The development of the Manhattan Project by Soviet intelligence lasted from the autumn of 1940 to August 1949. The presence of the USSR's own atomic weapons stopped the attempt of the United States and its allies to launch a surprise attack on Russian territory and for many years ensured political and military balance between the two opposing systems.

The video lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live Broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.
