History of Russia: Outdoor photo exhibitions of the "When the Trees Were Tall" project presented in Moscow

8 July 2020

On July 1, 2020, the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography (Moscow) launched an outdoor exhibition in the Zelenaya Reka (Green River) Park. The "When the Trees Were Tall" exhibition project provides four outdoor photo exhibitions. The photo project showcases the works of authors included in the "Anthology of Russian Photography of the XX Century. Photos of the 1960-1970s".

The project opens with the "Victories! Big and Small" exhibition, featuring the humanistic photographs of the 1960s and 1970s. Photographers of that time aimed for a clean report, rejecting the affectation, pathos and solemnity of previous years. The exhibition includes the works of such Soviet photography classics as Vladimir Lagrange, Jacob Khalip, Mikhail Litvinsky, Yuri Abramochkin, Vasily Kunyaev, Nina Sviridova and Dmitry Vozdvizhensky. The exhibition is devoted to the period when, for the first time, Soviet photography displayed a keen interest to a person with his feelings, emotions and small, personal victories. It presents a total of 40 works of the USSR photo heritage.

The outdoor exhibition included works by Soviet authors of the "Thaw" period, reflecting a wonderful time of change and hope. The project "When the Trees Were Tall" represents the photographs of the 1960-1970s when reportage and club photography were on the peak in the USSR.

The project includes four outdoor photo exhibitions:

- "Victories! Big and Small" - July 1 - August 20, 2020;

- "Knowledge Time" - August 21 - October 5, 2020;

- "Before, the Sun was Brighter, the Grass was Greener ..." - October 6 - December 15;

- "Waiting for the Holiday" - December 16 - February 1, 2021.
