History and Culture: XVII century icon "The Dormition of the Mother of God" presented at an exhibition in the Suzdal Kremlin

2 January 2021

The State Vladimir-Suzdal Museum-Reserve presents the exhibition "Alive after Death" as a part of the cycle "Exhibited for the First Time". The Museum-Reserve displays the XVII century icon "The Dormition of the Mother of God". The exhibition will run in the Suzdal Kremlin until March 1, 2021.

The icon originates from the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir. The preserved inscription on the slab from the western wall of the temple states that the Dormition Cathedral was built in 1644-1649. It was ordered by the Vladimir merchants Patrikei, Andrei and Grigory Denisovs-Rodionovs with nephews and townspeople Vasily Obrosimov Khmylov and Semyon Ivanovich Somov. The icon "The Dormition of the Mother of God" was in the row of local saints of the four-level iconostasis near the Holy Doors. It was adorned with crowns, chased silver with gilded edges and a pattern in the middle. The icon was restored in 1986–1987, by S. V. Volodin at the "Rosrestavratsiya" Association.

The professional and refined painting of the icon allows suggesting that it was created by Moscow artists belonging to the average group of qualified metropolitan icon painters who made icons for parish churches.
