State and Society: Exhibitions devoted to the ongoing Russian Census opened in cities of the country

The Russian Census runs from October 15 to November 14, 2021. In the remote territories of the country, it will last until December 20, 2021. For the first time, it provides an opportunity to participate in electronic format together with the usual way of collecting data. Citizens may fill out an electronic census form on the Unified Portal of State and Municipal Services from October 15 to November 8, 2021.

Russian President Vladimir Putin appealed to Russians to take part in the census. "Census data will help the Government make more accurate, which means more effective, decisions to develop the economy and the social spheres, including healthcare, education and demography.

Addressing the citizens of Russia, I want to say that this is not a formal matter. In this connection, I want to remind the authorities at all levels, from the municipalities to the federal government, of your responsibility to render assistance and support to your colleagues carrying out this work, as well as volunteers taking part in it", the head of state said.

The President took part in the current general census, using the Unified Portal of State and Municipal Services.

Marking this event, cultural institutions throughout Russia prepared thematic exhibitions.

So, the Museum of the History of Sochi Resort City launched the exhibition "Russia Appreciates Everyone!". It showcases archival documents, photographs and books related to the history of this event in Russia.

The Rare Books Department of the Zonal Scientific Library of Voronezh State University opened the exhibition "Photography of the Russian Empire (To the History of the First General Census of 1897)".

The Manuscripts and Rare Publications Department of the Ahmet Zeki Velidi National Library prepared a unique book exhibition, which presents statistical publications of Ufa Province and the Russian Empire in different periods, issued before the 1917 October Revolution.

The United State Archives of Chelyabinsk Region arranged a virtual exhibition entitled "Censuses in Chelyabinsk Region according to the Documents of the United State Archives of Chelyabinsk Region". It features documents devoted to the history of censuses in Russia and the South Urals.

The first general census of the Russian Empire took place in 1897. It was initiated by Pyotr Semyonov-Tyan-Shansky, an outstanding Russian geographer, traveller, statesman and public figure. The first census was the only source of reliable data on the population of Russia in the late XIX century. According to the 1897 census, the number of residents of the Russian Empire amounted to over 125 million people.

In the USSR, there were seven censuses. In modern Russia, it took place in October 2002. The second census was held in 2010 under the motto "Russia Appreciates Everyone!". The third Russian Census started on October 15.
