Memorable Dates: Exhibition “Experiment That Changed the World. Marking the 100th Anniversary of the Formation of the USSR” presented in the Museum of Political History of Russia in St. Petersburg

26 December 2022

The exhibition Experiment That Changed the World. Marking the 100th Anniversary of the Formation of the USSR is presented at the Museum of Political History of Russia (St. Petersburg). On December 30, 1922, delegates from the RSFSR, the Ukrainian SSR, the Byelorussian SSR and the Transcaucasian Federation adopted the fundamental documents: the Declaration and the Treaty on the Formation of the USSR. The Bolsheviks declared the new state they were creating as the first socialist state in the history of mankind, where the true equality of all the numerous peoples would be ensured.

The legacy of the Soviet state that existed for almost 70 years is being actively touched upon in Russian society. For several decades, historians have been discussing the causes of the collapse of the USSR, and the principles and methods of formation of a multinational Soviet Union.

The exhibition Experiment That Changed the World tells about the purpose of the founders of the USSR and the real circumstances of the emergence of a multinational Soviet state, as well as reflects the complex and contradictory process that resulted in the USSR. The exhibition is based on unique photographs, posters, documents that show both the struggle of the Bolsheviks for the world proletarian revolution and the establishment of Soviet power on the national outskirts of the former Russian Empire. The display presents a wide gallery of famous and forgotten historical figures who were direct participants in those events. Visitors will see personal belongings of the first head of the USSR, Chairman of the TsIK of the USSR M. I. Kalinin, founder and head of the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Soviet Republic Artyom (F. A. Sergeyev), clothes of combatants during the Civil War, and other unique items.

The exhibition will run until March 2023.
