IT and Society: Russia launches “Safe Runet Week”

“Safe Runet Week” – a traditional Russian event, that brings into focus safe use of Internet and mobile technologies - is taking place on February 1 - 8 2011.

The “Week” is a series of events united under one theme, and namely creation of safe online environment for children and adults, as well as building of a culture of responsible, ethical and safe use of “new technologies”. These events are being held in Moscow and many other regions of Russia.

“Safe Runet Week” is timed to the International Safer Internet Day. The International Day is aimed to draw the attention of specialists and Internet users to the problem of content security of the Web. Safer Internet Day was established in 2004 on initiative of the European Commission and is presently being observed in more than 60 countries all over the world including Russia. The Russian Week precedes the Safer Internet Day (2nd Tuesday of February). 

“Safe Runet Week” was launched for the first time in 2008 on initiative of the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT) and Microsoft’s office in Russia. From 2009 the “Week” has been operated by the Safe Internet Center in Russia. This is a leading Russian project that represents Russia in a Safe Internet Centers network at the European level. Right then the Safe Runet Week was included into series of official events of the Safer Internet Day, which have been taking place in various countries of the world, and today is an official event of the Day in Russia.

The multifaceted program of the “Week” includes conferences, “roundtable” discussion, discussions with experts, project presentations, contests, quizzes and other events.
