IT and Culture: Russian Museum unveils its first “travelling” virtual branch

The Russian Museum has unveiled its first “travelling” virtual branch on board of the “Mir” sailing vessel. The ship from St. Petersburg has set off for cities of Europe, whose residents will be offered an opportunity to see artworks displayed at the museum.

The sailing branch has been created within the framework of the project “Russian Museum: virtual branch” and precedes opening of the permanent information and educational center at the facility of the Naval Academy.

In course of its European voyage “Mir” will visit the cities of Germany, Poland, Belgium, Norway, Great Britain, Sweden, Lithuania and Finland. Residents of European cities will have a chance to familiarize themselves with the collection of the Russian Museum, see the cultural heritage of Russia and take a virtual tour to the museum.

“The project fulfils educational objectives – it generates interest of the wide public to values of Russian culture, historical past of Russia via free access to electronic and digital resources", the museum staff comments. As for today there are 82 virtual centers opened by the Russian Museum: 57 – in Russia and 25 – abroad.
