History of Russia: Vladimir celebrates 900th anniversary of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky

June 29 – July 6, 2011 the city of Vladimir is holding celebrations timed to 900th birthday anniversary of an outstanding statesman of Kievan Rus’, St. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. His services include liberation of Russian Orthodox Church from Byzantine influence and the first attempt to unite principalities under his authority.

On June 29 the Theotokos of Bogolyubovo (Bogolyubskaya Icon of the Theotokos) arrived to Vladimir from Vyshhorod, Kiev Oblast.

On July 2 the city of Vladimir launched a citywide celebration of 900th anniversary of St. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky. On this day was held a cross procession from the Assumption Cathedral to Golden Gate. By Golden Gate was read the address of the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

Residents of Vladimir revere Andrei Bogolyubsky – it was he who moved the capital of Rus’ from Kiev to Vladimir in the 12th century, due to his efforts were created the masterpieces of Vladimir land – the Assumption Cathedral, Golden Gate; the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, Bogolyubovo.

The city of Vladimir launched a presentation of the book “Left to us as a heritage. Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky and Vladimir Krai”, which was prepared by Sergei Bubnov, member of staff of Vladimir-Suzdal Museum Reserve. The book casts light on life, deeds and feats of the Prince, memorial sites associated with his name. The regional Center of Fine Arts opened an art exhibition “Holy Russia”, which showcases a portrait “Gallery of Patriarchs of Moscow and All Russia” by People’s Artist of Russia Viktor Shilov. Apart from this, on display are works by artists of Vladimir Oblast: painting, graphic works, sculpture and decorative and applied arts.
