Libraries of Russia: “West European Book of 15th-18th Centuries: Study and Cataloguing” International Workshop in Vologda

October 11-14 2011 I. V. Babushkin Vologda Regional Scientific Library held the International Workshop “West European Book of 15th-18th Centuries: Study and Cataloguing”.

The workshop ran within the cooperation program between libraries of Russia and the École Nationale des Chartes (National School of Paleography and Archival Studies) (France, Paris) in partnership with Bibliothèque nationale de France (The National Library of France).

The purpose of the project is to help libraries, museums and archives in their efforts to study the collection of foreign old editions, discover valuable and rare books and catalogue them using Internet resources.

Within the workshop foreign and Russian specialists conducted lectures on book history and book design, held master classes on using Internet resources while book cataloguing, challenging difficult tasks of edition identification, and a practical event on arhaeographic study of collections.

By the tradition International workshops “West European Book of 15th-18th Centuries: Study and Cataloguing” were held in Moscow. In 2009 the seminar on problems of rare books debuted in Astrakhan. This year Vologda was chosen as the venue of the seminar. The Deputy Head of the Department for Culture and Cultural Heritage Property Protection of Vologda Region – Vera Ilyashenko, explained that libraries in Vologda Region held the rarest collection of ancient books.
