Digital Libraries: Turkey unveils its first online library

The first online library in Turkish called HiperKitap (HyperBook) has appeared in Turkey. The project has been founded by Hiperlink Limited, the company which promotes public access to the literature in Turkish on the Internet. “This is a brand new system for Turkey”, HiperKitap says. — “We have reached agreements with 220 publishers in Turkey. Now many of them reconsider agreements with their authors”.

The project was launched in 2009. Two years later the library was ready to open for its virtual patrons. At the moment its database numbers about 3,500 books. 60 universities in Turkey now provide access to library’s archives. The system will be also installed in public libraries in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey.
