History of Russia: Research conference on the history of palace and park ensembles of Russia kicks off in Pavlovsk

December 15th-16th 2011 “Pavlovsk” State Museum-Reserve is running a research conference entitled “Palace and Park Ensembles of Russia and Art Culture of Western Europe. Late 18th – 1st third of 19th century”.

The conference touches upon a wide range of issues which concern the influence of West European culture on development of palaces and parks in Russia. History of art collections, creators of architectural monuments and palace interiors, workshops and authors of arts and crafts, cultural and historical context, evolution of styles and artistic means; European analogues which served as a source for creating Russian palace and park ensembles – these are some of problems which are addressed by the conference.

Time frameworks covered by the conference are: late 18th – early 19th cc. – the time of development and flowering of “Pavlovsk” palace and park ensemble. The conference will run two sections – “History of Palaces and Parks” and “Restoration”. Among keynote speakers are museum fellows from St. Petersburg and Moscow.

On December 16th, the final day of the conference, “Pavlovsk” State Museum-Reserve is opening two new exhibits: “Vestments and Church Utensils” in the church of Pavlovsk palace and “New Arrivals” in Cavalier Guards Room.
