IT and Culture: Russian Museum’s hundredth virtual branch opens in Antarctica

7 February 2012

The Russian Museum is opening its hundredth virtual branch at Novolazarevskaya Antarctic station on February 7th 2012. The virtual Russian Museum will be now available even on the Earth’s southernmost continent Antarctica, which was discovered on January 16th (28th) 1820 by the Russian expedition led by Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.

During the virtual branch’s inauguration ceremony at Novolazarevskaya station Director of the Russian Museum V. A. Gusev will present multimedia films and programs which tell about the Russian Museum’s collection, prominent Russian artists, museum’s palaces, styles and trends in Russian art. All these programs and films of the Russian Museum will be offered to scholars, who conduct their observations at the polar station. This is the first time the virtual branch is opening its doors to meet the needs of the scientific community, people, who lead long research expeditions. Director will also speak about the Russian museum’s project at the Indian Arctic station “Maitri”.

The opening of the virtual branch at Novolazarevskaya station was preceded by the foundation of the “travelling” virtual branch on “Academician Fedorov” research vessel, which left St. Petersburg in November 2011 to join the work of the Russian Antarctic Expedition.
