History of Saint-Petersburg: The 70th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade to be celebrated by large-scale events

In Saint-Petersburg, under the chairmanship of Governor Georgy Poltavchenko, took place a meeting of the Coordinating Council of Veterans Affairs in Saint-Petersburg. Council members discussed issues of preparation for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade.

Georgy Poltavchenko said that this sacred day was very important for the city - it unites all generations of St. Petersburg-Leningrad residents.

The Governor noted that the preparation for the holiday the city holds together with veterans' organizations, the Western Military Region, the law enforcement agencies. An action plan dedicated to the anniversary is developed. It consists of five sections, one of which is entirely made ​​up of veterans’ proposals. And the plan included more than one hundred memorable and festive celebrations for veterans, blockade people, residents of Saint-Petersburg and guests of the city.

At the request of veterans, the celebrations will be held in two days. January 26, 2014 is held a solemn funeral ceremony at the Piskaroyvskoye memorial cemetery and on other memorial cemeteries. January 27, for the first time in the history of the city will be held a military parade on the Avenue of the Unconquered. The governor also stressed that the Plan will be completed, and the celebration is not limited to two days. The whole 2014 will be devoted to this important date, as reflected in social programs and support for veterans.

In honor of the anniversary in St. Petersburg is released a landmark Medal "In honor of the 70th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade". It will be awarded to all veterans of the city, blockade people, living in other regions of Russia and abroad.
