Society and reading: Events to promote readings to be held in Russia as part of the Year of Literature in 2015

On September 1, 2014 the Federation Council Speaker Valentine Matvienko during her visit to the Leo Tolstoy Yasnaya Polyana school № 2 highlighted the importance of the Year of Literature in 2015, which will be held after the Year of Culture. Thus, it will be preserved the continuity of the emphasis on the spiritual education of citizens, the Speaker of the Federation Council is convinced.

She drew attention to a series of planned events, which should attract Russians, especially young people, to the books. In particular, the Federation Council Speaker spoke about the transformation of bookstores to the cultural centers, which will host presentations of new Russian and foreign book industry, as well as literary and art evenings. “We need to foster the wish for the reading from school”, noted Valentine Matvienko.

She also assured that in 2015 the “Literary Map of Russia”, which will be based on the analysis of libraries, museums, universities, houses of writers and bookstores, will be created. The map will show not only the existence of cultural objects, providing access to books, but will also assess their compliance with the standards on UNESCO, as well as will become a kind of business plan for the further development of the branch. Valentine Matvienko also stressed the need to hold a lot of work to support regional libraries.
