Information technology and libraries: Russian libraries to become multimedia centers

7 November 2014

The Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky held a presentation of libraries of a new type at the Russian State Library.

According to the idea of developers of the project, modern library centers should be comfortable and convenient for visitors, starting with the lobby, where you want to place the information stands.

The minimum program of such center, able to take up to 20 thousand of readers, should contain equipped computer rooms to work, an access to electronic services in the zone for teamwork, as well as separate facilities for learning and development of children. In short, the library should be a new type of modern multi-media centers with a variety of features and amenities. Among the latter, for example, are bookstores with elements of the cafe.

The new model standard of public library contains activities in three ways: as the custodian of the cultural heritage, educational center, as well as a mediator to work with the online space. In the near future, this standard will be necessarily brought up to the governors and authorities in the region and recommended to the state and municipal authorities, as, indeed, in general to all library and information institutions.
