Society and book culture: A unique collection of books is formed in the Kaliningrad Regional Scientific Library

The collection of rare books of the Kaliningrad Regional Scientific Library formed a book collection of unique editions in English, which is the hallmark of a bookplate with the image of a sign on the background of the book of Soviet and American flags, enclosed in a circle entry «To the Heroic People of the Soviet Union the People of America».

In 60s the books with such book-marks came to the Kaliningrad Regional Library of the State Library for Foreign Literature (now the M. I. Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature).

It is known that in 1946 the American charity committee «Russia War Relief» (RWR) organized a campaign to collect books for the USSR. The basis for the book will become the destruction by the Nazis in the Soviet Union thousands of libraries and millions of books.

In the campaign to collect books were responded many organizations and ordinary Americans. Thousands of America donated their books. According to some reports, by the autumn of 1946, in the Soviet Union were sent hundreds of thousands of books. The core of this collection made editions of the classics of English and American literature.

Today, library users are available 70 books bookplate «To the Heroic People of the Soviet Union the People of America».
