Petrograd 1917 presented in the Presidential Library’s interactive project

7 November 2021

Interactive exhibition dedicated to revolutionary events in Petrograd is presented on the Presidential Library’s portal. The electronic resource spotlights the events of the turning point for the country in 1917.

The format of the interactive calendar makes it possible to "look" into those distant days. According to the dates to the new style (Gregorian calendar), separate materials are placed (documents, articles from newspapers, leaflets, archival photographs, etc.) and multimedia historical maps are presented.

Multimedia historical maps help to feel the atmosphere of revolutionary Petrograd: they tell about four turning points of 1917, which have a common logic of development. Among these subjects are the events of February (the fall of the monarchy, February 23-28), July (an attempted coup, July 3-8, 15) and October (overthrow of the Provisional Government, October 24 - November 1). A separate block is devoted to the history of the stay of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) in Petrograd from April 3 to October 25, 1917.

In the format of info-video graphics, the resource provides complete information about what is happening: key places are indicated on an interactive map of Petrograd with an indication of the address and are accompanied by archival or modern photographs. Information about the events is presented in the form of quotes from the memoirs of contemporaries, including direct participants in the actions, periodicals and archival documents.

Thanks to this resource, a visitor to the Presidential Library’s portal has opportunity to form his own opinion about the events of 1917.

When preparing the interactive calendar, a wide range of sources was used, among the authors - people of different political views and professions, social status and official position. All this makes it possible to look at the historical picture from different points of view and draw your own conclusions about the degree of correctness and objectivity of interpretations that are given to the events of the 1917 Revolution in Russia. The interactive exhibition is regularly updated with new documents.

Today, the institution's portal, one can remotely visit the legendary cruiser Aurora, and visit such exhibition as “The Saving Sword of the Revolution”: the Chekist in Life, Cinema and Literature”, “Journey from Petrograd to Moscow. 1918: marking the 100th anniversary of the relocation of the Soviet government and the capital to Moscow”,

Virtual projects are an actively developing area of activity of the Presidential Library, thanks to which the electronic repository, along with paper, photo, audio and video materials, has been added with exhibits from exhibitions, items from museum collections.
