26 May 2021

A series of events on the eve of the Russian Arctic, organized jointly with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, took place at the Presidential Library on May 26, 2021.

Opening the meeting, acting Director General of the Presidential Library Pavel Tereshchenko stressed the importance of the Arctic theme both on a national and global scale. He noted that today's event brought together Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the official publisher of regulatory legal acts and the Presidential Library, a nationwide electronic repository of digital copies of the most important documents on the history, theory and practice of Russian statehood as well as the Russian language.

In his turn, the first deputy editor-in-chief of Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Yuri Lepsky, thanked the administration of the Presidential Library for their cooperation and called the library’s venue a “home” for Rossiyskaya Gazeta: “This is an outpost where we feel confident, feel the elbow of our colleagues, their friendly participation".

Pavel Tereshchenko and Yuri Lepsky exchanged copies of a new cooperation agreement between the Presidential Library and the editorial board of Rossiyskaya Gazeta. It should be noted that the fruitful interaction of organizations has been developing since 2012. The first cooperation agreement between the Presidential Library and the editorial board of Rossiyskaya Gazeta was signed in December 2016. During this time, various joint projects have been implemented. They are multimedia exhibitions, video lectures, presentations of new issues of Rodina popular science and history magazine and etc.

According to director of the North-West branch of Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Angelica Gurskaya, the fact that the new cooperation agreement between the institutions was signed not for five years, like the past, but unlimited, confirms that “there are new interesting ideas and serious projects ahead and meetings at the Presidential Library’s venue will take place many more times”.

The highlight event on May 26 at the Presidential Library was the opening of the electronic exhibition of the photojournalist of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta Nikolai Gernett Novaya Zemlya: Pass-Through Memory, organized with the support of the Northern Maritime Museum of Arkhangelsk and the National Park "Russian Arctic".

In August 2020, Nikolai Gernett took part in the expedition of the Northern Fleet, the Russian Geographical Society and the Russian Arctic National Park, which was tasked with finding traces of the pioneers of the Arctic, supplementing their biographies with new facts and recording changes in the points of Novaya Zemlya. In the course of this work, several places, captured by famous polar artists, were discovered.

The Presidential Library’s exposition displays photographs by Nikolai Gernett, as well as drawings by Tyko Vylka and Alexander Borisov, slides by Nikolai Pinegin, an artist, writer, member of the Sedov expedition, from the unique collection of the Northern Maritime Museum of Arkhangelsk.

According to Nikolai Gernett, the photographs he took are a cross between a report on the expedition and a personal creative idea. “When I was preparing for the expedition”, - the author of the exhibition admitted, “I visited the Presidential Library’s portal, learned about the books on northern and Arctic topics available in the collections... Even some ideas for photographs were taken from the collections, for which I am very grateful to the Presidential Library". The event continued with a video recording of the Presidential Library's webinar The Image of the Arctic and Antarctic in Diaries and Memories.

Participants and guests of the meeting were able to learn about another project of the Presidential Library on the Arctic theme - an exhibition of one photograph. The tapestry of the Vyritsa Uzor tapestry factory has been transferred to the photograph by Vladimir Pushkarev The Chapel on the Bely Island (Kara Sea), provided by the press service of the Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area. Thanks to a special QR code, it is possible to go to the Presidential Library’s portal, where the original photograph and audio file Point on the map - Bely Island is presented. It tells about the chapel built on the island in memory of the death of the BD-5 convoy in the Kara Sea. Through the photograph and commentary on it, one of the war dramas of the Great Patriotic War is refracted through the decades.

A series of events organized jointly with Rossiyskaya Gazeta was broadcast on the Presidential Library's portal in Live broadcasts section and on the institution's YouTube channel.

The Presidential Library’s portal features the materials of the electronic collection Arctic Development. It includes scientific research, essays, memoirs, archival files, official documents, newsreels, photographs and other visual materials spotlighting Arctic travels and expeditions, about the Arctic Ocean, about the territories adjacent to it and the lives of their inhabitants, about the development of the polar lands. from ancient times to the present. A separate section is presented on the Northern Sea Route, which played a significant role in the development of the Arctic, as well as materials from art exhibitions dedicated to the North. The highlight in the collection is publications related to the period of the “Arctic boom” in the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s.

The exhibition of the photojournalist of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta Nikolai Gernett New Earth: Passing Memory will run until June 9, 2021. To visit the exhibition please first register by phone (812) 334-25-14 or send an email to excursion@prlib.ru.
