The Presidential Library presents the project "BAM: through Space and Time"

In the year of the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline, the Presidential Library is acting as an information partner for the open database BAM: Through Space and Time.

This project was initiated by specialists from the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Presidential Library and the institute signed a cooperation agreement during the Eastern Economic Forum in 2023.

BAM is one of the world's largest railways. It runs through the territory of six Russian regions, through Eastern Siberia and the Far East, from the Taishet station to the port of Sovetskaya Gavan. The highway is over 4,300 kilometers long. BAM is a major socio-economic development project in the eastern regions of our country.The official birthday of BAM is considered to be July 8, 1974, when a resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and the Council of Ministers of the USSR was issued on the construction of the Baikal–Amur Railway.

The main goal of the Internet project BAM: Through Space and Time is to organize and provide free and convenient access to the main resources and sources related to the history of the Baikal-Amur Mainline.

The database contains a variety of text and visual materials, including those from state and departmental archives in different regions of Russia as well as online resources. For the first time, scientific reports, documents, and most of the journalistic materials have been converted into an electronic format.

The BAM: Through Space and Time portal contains generalized scientific information, documentary sources, and essays written by contemporaries about the Baikal-Amur Railway, as well as data about cities, companies, and prominent people involved in its construction.

In the near future, the electronic database will be expanded and updated with new materials.

On the portal of the Presidential Library, information about the legendary construction site from the XX century is also available in a separate electronic collection dedicated to the Baikal-Amur Mainline. This collection includes various materials that reveal the history of railway construction, such as official documents, plans, reports, photographs, and chronicles of events.
