History and Culture: Exhibition “The Museum and the Theatre. 100 Years Together (1918-2018)” is about to open in Moscow

The exhibition “The Museum and the Theatre. 100 Years Together (1918-2018)” is opening on December 19, 2018 in the New Manege Exhibition Hall in Moscow. This is the first large-scale project, that spotlights the collection of the Bolshoi Theatre Museum.

The history of the Bolshoi Theatre goes back to 1776. Its museum was set up in 1918, when the collection based on the Imperial Theatre’s archives was built up. Today the museum houses more than 100,000 items.

The anniversary exhibition will present unique exhibits that have never been displayed before: Feodor Chaliapin’s portrait by Alexander Golovin; the fan that belonged to Anna Pavlova; works of art by Alexander Gorsky, choreographer and creator of “Don Quixote” ballet; 120 costumes of opera singers and ballet dancers. The oldest costume dates from the 18th century.
