Culture: Exhibition of works by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen presented at the State Hermitage Museum
2020 marked the 250th anniversary of Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), an outstanding Danish sculptor and one of the leading figures of the neoclassical era.
The State Hermitage Museum and the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen launched the exhibition "Classical Myth in the Art of Bertel Thorvaldsen. Drawings and Sculptures from the Collections of the Thorvaldsens Museum", which will run until October 3, 2021.
For the first time, eight sculptural works and eighteen drawings from the collections of the Copenhagen museum are showcased in a single exhibition space. Thorvaldsen is famous not only for his sculptures but also for his drawings. His graphic works allow tracing the creation and development of the future sculpture. All the exhibition items are united by the theme of ancient mythology, which is one of the leading directions in the Danish master's oeuvre.
