Information Technology and Culture: Virtual guide to the exhibition "Aivazovsky and Russian Marine Painters" available at the Artifact app

24 August 2021

Twenty-three works by Ivan Aivazovsky and other marine painters from the State Russian Museum are available now in the Artifact AR app. The application introduces users to the exhibition "Aivazovsky and Russian Marine Painters", opened at the Branch of the State Russian Museum in Malaga (Spain).

The exposition includes the most outstanding works by Ivan Aivazovsky - View of Odessa, View of Constantinople, The Ninth Wave, Creation of the World, Storm over Evpatoria, Wave. It also comprises the paintings by Alexei Bogolyubov, Grigory and Nikanor Chernetsov, Alexander Beggrov, Isaac Lizak and other artists.

Aivazovsky had no personal exhibition in Spain during his life. Later, the Russian art exhibitions in this country showcased only individual works of the great marine painter. Spending many years in the travels, the artist visited Asia, Africa and America, many European countries, including Spain. Having stayed in Madrid, Granada, Cadiz and other cities, Aivazovsky made many sketches and afterwards, from memory, painted several landscapes, including a view of the Malaga Bay. This painting from the present collections of the Feodosia Art Gallery is available along with other works by Aivazovsky in the Artifact app.

The virtual guide was created by the Virtual Russian Museum service and specialists from the Branch of the State Russian Museum in Malaga. It is the second project of this kind. The Artifact app allows presenting in the virtual space everything that does not enter the real exposition: sketches for works, the restoration process, the comparison of selected items. The materials of the virtual guide are available in Russian and Spanish.

Besides the works of Russian marine painters, the virtual guide of the Artifact app introduces the seascapes of Malaga, painted by Spanish artists Emilio Okon, Jose Ruiz Blasco and his son Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Like Aivazovsky, they developed a tradition of the romantic landscape.

The Artifact app users may learn about twenty-three works from the exhibition at the Branch of the State Russian Museum in Malaga. They also have the opportunity to listen to audio guides in Russian and Spanish and explore details of the paintings using "points of interest".

The Artifact app runs both at the exposition and home. The application is free for download on Google Play and AppStore.
