Presidential Library presents video lecture dedicated to the Day of National Flag of Russian Federation

22 August 2024

On August 22, 2024 at 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library will host a video lecture demonstration titled The National Flag of Russia, presented by Gleb Kalashnikov, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Executive Secretary of the Heraldry Council under the President of the Russian Federation.

Prior to the event, a multimedia exhibition titled August 22 - the Day of the National Flag of the Russian Federation based on materials from the Presidential Library's collection will be opened, providing information about the history and significance of one of Russia's state symbols.

This event will be part of the celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the holiday in Russia, which was officially designated as the Day of the National Flag by presidential decree in 1994. The holiday has been observed annually since then on August 22.

In his video lecture, Gleb Kalashnikov talks about the history of the Russian flag. He explains the difference between the terms "banner" and "flag". The main difference is that a banner exists in only one copy, while a flag can be reproduced. A banner is not just a heraldic symbol, but also a sacred object, a relic. On the other hand, a flag is a more recent invention, born out of the need to identify ships in large fleets. Banners, which were typically decorated with intricate oil paintings and expensive materials, were not always easy to see in the open sea and were damaged by wind and salt. This led to the creation of flags, which had simpler designs and could be easily reproduced.

The video lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcasted on the Presidential Library’s portal in TV Channel section.

Other lectures by Gleb Vadimovich Kalashnikov on the symbols of state power in our country are also available on the Presidential Library portal: The State Emblem of Russia and The National Anthem of Russia.

In addition, the documentary Flag of Russia from the trilogy State Symbols of Russia tells the history of Russia's national flag.
