It was erected in the middle of the 19th century on the site of the ancient settlement of Brest-Litovsk. The important military-strategic position of Brest-Litovsk in the west of Russia determined the choice of its place for the construction of the fortress. It was built according to the design of engineer-general KI Opperman. It was opened on April 26, 1842.
