Birthday anniversary of Magomet I. Gadzhiyev, eminent Soviet submariner, Hero of the Soviet Union
There is no other place where the equality would be the same as on a submarine, where all either win or die.
M. I. Gadzhiyev
December 20, 1907 in the village of Megeb (at present a village of the Gunibsky district, Dagestan) was born Magomet I. Gadzhiyev, a famous Soviet submariner, Hero of the Soviet Union, Captain 2nd rank.
In 1913, the peasant family of Gadzhiyev moved from Megeba to the town of Temir-Khan-Shura (at present the town of Buinaksk). With the outbreak of the Civil War, Temir-Khan-Shura was the scene of the confrontation of different political forces: from the late autumn of 1918, the town had been the center of Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus, and in the spring of 1919 it was captured by the troops of General Denikin. A year later, after the establishment in Temir-Khan-Shura of the Soviet power, young Magomet joined one of the units of the Red Army and as a telephone operator was involved in the fighting in the North Caucasus until May 1922.
After the Civil War Gadzhiyev worked at a fruit processing factory and studied in the Dagestan Pedagogical College. After graduating from the college, Magomet, as one of the best Komsomol members was sent to the Naval Academy in Leningrad. After graduating in 1931, he served as a mine layer and deputy commander at submarines of the Black Sea Fleet, and two years later was transferred to the Pacific Fleet as commander of a submarine.
In those years, the formation of submarines of the Pacific Fleet, commanded by G. N. Kholostyakov introduced innovative principles in training submarine forces, was the first in RKKF to master navigation under the ice and execute combat training tasks in stormy weather, as well as to implement a series of long trips in the open ocean. The submarine commanded by Magomet was the best in the fleet on all counts, and in late 1935, Lieutenant-Commander Gadzhiyev was awarded the Order of Lenin for success in combat training.
In 1937, Gadzhiyev entered the Voroshilov Naval Academy, but had not finished it due to his transfer in 1939 to the Northern Fleet. In 1940 he became commander of the submarine division, and in that capacity met the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War. Within a year of hostilities Mogamet personally participated in 12 military campaigns of his submarine division. By the spring of 1942 submariners led by Captain 2nd rank Gadzhiyev had sunk 10 enemy ships and transports, putting into practice innovative methods, such as attacking ships with submarines’ artillery pieces.
May 12, 1942 the submarine K-23 with Gadzhiyev on board carried out an operation to locate an enemy convoy comprising two cargo ships, three frigates and three submarines. After the torpedo and artillery attack, the K-23 crew tried to escape from persecution, but the submarine was shelled by enemy aircraft and destroyed.
Under a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of 23 October 1942, Captain 2 rank M. I. Gadzhiyev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. In honor of Magomet Gadzhiyev were erected several monuments. One of the naval bases of the Northern Fleet - the city of Gadzhievo was named after the famous submariner, as well as a number of streets and schools in Murmansk, Severemorsk, Polarny, Makhachkala and other cities.
