History of St. - Petersburg: Vernissage of historical pictures reproductions opens in St. - Petersburg
Today the center of St. – Petersburg will turn into an outdoor exhibition hall. The city’s residents and guests will be able to see the displays of the “Military history of Russia 1828-1917" exhibition, which will decorate the constructions around the magnificent Lobanov-Rostovsky mansion, or the “House with lions”, which had been built by the project of Auguste de Montferrand and is now being reconstructed.
The vernissage will represent reproductions of historical pictures by Aivazovsky, Vereshchagin, Mazurovsky and other prominent artists and also the portraits of Military Ministers.
The Ministry of War had been located in the “House with lions” for about a hundred years. The major victories of the Russian Empire – the heroic siege of Pleven, annexation of the Central Asia and Caucasus and many other important historical events - were planned within this mansion, which had been constructed in the beginning of XIX century.
