IT and Society: UK to become the world leader in the digital economy by 2020
Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister of the UK, has said that every home in the UK would get an access to super-fast broadband. In his speech, Mr Brown set out his plans to make Britain "the world leader in the digital economy" by 2020.
The Labour Party initiative will become possible due to a £6-a-year landline levy. The PM also promised to create a single website bringing together all government and public sector services. The "MyGov" portal will allow people to manage pensions and benefits, pay council tax, apply for school places and jobs, and book doctors' appointments online.
He claimed the change would bring in cheaper and better public services, and make trading easier. This measure will help all the residents of the country participate in the development of the e-government, thus make the British government "the most efficient, open and responsive" in the world. The Labour party is convinced that in order to achieve these goals the government should promote the super-fast broadband to the remote parts of the country.
