
Regions of Russia: Exhibition «Vologda during war years» opened at Vologda State Museum-preserve
The exhibition “Vologda during war years” marks the 65th Victory anniversary in the Great Patriotic War. It represents contribution of residents of Vologda – war and labor veterans - to the Victory during the years of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).
Vologda region was among 10 regions of Russia, which were dramatically destroyed during war years. 340,000 soldiers from Vologda were sent to front line, over 185,000 of them perished during the war.
The first exhibition hall displays materials, which unveil feat of arms of the region’s residents. Over 170 of Vologda residents have been bestowed with a title Hero of the Soviet Union, two of them – pilot A. F. Klubov and Marshal of the Soviet Union I. S. Konev – became twice Heroes of the Soviet Union. Over 162,000 Vologda residents have been awarded with medal “For valorous work during the Great Patriotic War”, 28 veterans – are holders of all three classes of the Order of Glory. Their feat of arms is proved by authentic documents, decorations, weapons, and uniforms displayed at the exhibition.
The second exhibition hall focuses the visitors’ attention on the valorous labor of Vologda people, who worked selflessly in home front, bringing closer the Victory Day. The Northern Railway and leading enterprises of Vologda were working hard during those years of war. The exhibition turns the spotlight on the documents, letters of commendation, and the State Defense Committee Red Banner.
The organizers are going to hold thematic excursions, series of functions on military and patriotic upbringing of pupils, colleges’ and Universities’ students, solemn ceremonies of taking the oath of loyalty.
