Peoples of Russia: Book on the history of Dagestan National Costume unveiled

“Epoch” publishing house has unveiled its new book, which focuses the readers’ attention on the history of Dagestan national costume.

The author of this instructive and richly illustrated album is Razita Gadzhikhanova, lecturer of the Faculty of Economics and Design at the Dagestan State Pedagogical University. She represents the national costume of mountain dwellers as an element of material and spiritual culture in historical development – from rock paintings to modern examples. The book provides a detailed description of men’s and women’s outfits, headdresses, shoes and decorations.

The book’s “National costumes in the eyes of artists” section, based on unique artefacts from the holdings of the P.S. Gamzatova Dagestan Museum of Fine Arts, will undoubtedly attract a keen interest among readers. Reproductions of canvases by 19th – 20th cc. artists stay side by side with high quality photographs of rich ethnographic resources based on the sketches of famous designers and promising young modellers of stage costumes for the Republic’s folklore groups.
