
Russian regions: Exhibition of the West European prints of the 16th – 19th centuries in Astrakhan
Until January 31, 2011 the Engraving Office of the Department of foreign art of the P. M. Dogadin Picture Gallery, Astrakhan, hosts an exhibition of the West European prints of the 16th – 19th centuries. The exposition “Only light and shade. Print masterpieces of the 16th – 19th centuries from the collection of I. A. Repin (1841-1908)” includes rare and valuable prints from the collection granted to Astrakhan in 1892.
Ivan Akimovich Repin (1841-1908), a son of Astrakhan merchants, honorary citizen, bibliophile and Maecenas, during his whole life had been collecting an unique library of rare books and prints for his native city.
The collection of I. A. Repin in the gallery covers the major areas of development of the French, German, Italian, English and Dutch print. The collections features the most known West European schools, eminent names and the basic genre repertoire of authors and reproductive print of the 15th – 19th centuries.
The exhibition displays for the first time large-scale lithographic vedute of the 17th – 19th centuries along with unique portrait miniatures.
