
History of St. Petersburg: Book about Leningrad Siege authored by Alexander Werth, British writer, shown off
On March 27 2012 the Friendship House (St. Petersburg) is holding a presentation of a book authored by a British journalist and writer Alexander Werth “Five days in besieged Leningrad”.
The book entitled “Five days in besieged Leningrad” was published in Great Britain in 1944 however it was forbidden in the Soviet Union. Sixty-seven years passed before the book was translated into Russian and was published to reach Russian readers.
Alexander Werth was one of the first foreign journalists to visit Leningrad after the end of the siege in September 1943. During his 5-day stay the journalist discovered the life and work of the city’s inhabitants. The book which came out in Great Britain in 1944 presented a true picture of life in the besieged city to readers abroad.
