Exhibitions: Works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Italian engraver, from the collection of the State Hermitage on display in Yekaterinburg
Exhibition of works by Italian engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi, "Palaces, ruins and dungeons," from the collection of the St. Petersburg Hermitage opened at Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts. The impressive part of the exhibition is devoted to the design fantasies of Piranesi, who was called "paper architect" by his contemporaries - during his life, he had built only one real building, the rest remained just challenging projects.
The exhibition includes 60 plates made using a technique of etching and cutter. They represent the four famous series: "The first part of architectures and perspectives", "Sights of Rome", "Grotesques" and "Dungeons". The last one was not very popular during the lifetime of Piranesi, but later it was praised for its unusual plot and spatial construction. Among the admirers of the series were Baudelaire, Gautier, Borges, Eisenstein, Dali.
