Russian regions: The exhibition “A small town in big war” in Kargopol

The Kargopol State History, Architecture and Art Museum (the Arkhangelsk region) presents a new exhibition "A small town in a big war". The exhibits tell about the contribution of Kargopol and the inhabitants of the northern edge of the defeat of Nazi Germany.  

At the beginning of the war, in 1941, a distant northern town is in the front zone and is an important strategic point. There converged on Leningrad road, Pudozh, Arkhangelsk, Nyandomu. Through Kargopol there were moved groups to the front. By railway through Nyandomu to the front were delivered loads by foreign ships under Lend-Lease in Arkhangelsk.

A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to the history of the capture of enemy saboteurs. Secret operation takes place in the local woods and swamps around the lake Lache autumn of 1942 participants in the events to neutralize saboteurs become cadets of the Veliky Ustiug military infantry school, fighters Fighter battalion locals. A special role is played plying on the lake steamer "I. S. Nikitin". The exposition includes the installation ship on board of which there are cadets and officers. Here, real things from the ship: lifebuoy lights. It attracts a large freight container (in the diaries of saboteurs "torpedo") in it, and others they dropped from German aircraft food and ammunition for the infiltrators. The operation completed successfully. 

The weapon by the Soviet Army of the Great Patriotic War: Mosin rifle, a bayonet, disk machine gun Degtyarev, stabilizers minutes, German trophies, are presented.

Visitors can see the personal belongings of soldiers, sent by themselves or relatives: items ammunition, uniforms, awards, notebooks, photographs and, of course, letters.
