Monuments of book culture: Old books from the Schneerson Library are presented at the exhibition in Moscow
Old books of prayers and hymns, which reading is the integral part of the celebration of the Jewish holiday Passover, were presented at the exhibition in the Jewish Museum and the Center of Tolerance (Moscow). These rarities are part of the famous Schneerson Library, which is stored in the museum.
It is believed that God commanded his people to tell the story of Passover the Exodus from Egypt, so it was never forgotten. Fulfillment of this commandment is a must-read these days the Passover book - Haggadah. As supposed to read in the family, then, unlike most other Jewish books, it was decorated with illustrations to make the story more interesting and attract the attention of children.
The exhibition features four editions of the Haggadah from the collection of the Schneerson dynasty: two of them are printed in Amsterdam, (1712 and 1765), one in Pisa (1801), one in Metz (1767). In addition to the books the exposition presents samples of illustrations and comments to them.
