The State Historical Museum (Moscow) hosts the exhibition "Derbent-2000. Dagestan. Russia".
Dagestan, the most southerly of the republics of the North Caucasus, is located on the border of Asia and Europe - at the junction of the diametrically opposite civilizations. There has long been home to more than 30 nationalities, diverse cultural and artistic traditions which have deep historical roots. The oldest city of Dagestan - Derbent, the 2000 anniversary of which we celebrate this year, is one of the oldest cities in Russia. This city represents one of the major centers on the Great Silk Road, has been witness to many historic events. Appreciating the value of historical and cultural heritage of ancient Derbent, in 2003, UNESCO included the Citadel, Ancient City and Fortress Buildings in the World Heritage List. Architectural and landscape ensemble "Ancient Derbent" includes a castle with a citadel, the old part of the city and many religious and civic buildings, the age of which varies from 100 to 2000 years. General history of the place, starting with the first fortified settlement, has five millennia.
To reveal Derbent in all facets of its manifestation is the task of this exhibition. But at the same time the purpose of the exhibition - to present to a wide audience the stages of a multi-faceted and rich way of cultural and historical development of the Republic of Dagestan.
