11 March 2016

"Gold of the Iconostases. Art Carving of the XVI-XIX Centuries" exhibition goes until April 3, 2016, in the Palace of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in Kolomenskoye (Moscow).

The audience for the first time will see unique exhibits from the storerooms of the museum - the royal doors, sculptures, bordered by curly frames icons, shiny gold openwork columns and carrying-out crosses. All of them were brought to Kolomenskoye in the 1930s, when many churches and monasteries were closing, and the objects of church decoration were threatened with destruction. Long-term work of restorers on their saving allowed to present these masterpieces of religious art as the highest achievement of Russian carvers skill, when creating the iconostasis used two traditional materials - wood and gold.

To discover the secrets of creation of the masterpieces and learn a history of the salvation of the central exhibit - Above Altar Cenis of 1677 from the Transfiguration Cathedral of the Solovetsky Monastery - will help the movies, specially prepared for this exhibition.
