Russian regions: The exhibition of photographs with views of Novgorod of the XIX century “Gift to the Empress” is opened

September 7, 2016 in the small reading room of the Novgorod Regional Universal Scientific Library was opened an exhibition of photographs "Gift to the Empress" with views of the Novgorod of the XIX century.

The exhibition - a joint project of the State Hermitage and the Novgorod Regional Universal Scientific Library of the Novgorod United Museum-Reserve, the Department of the Russian Historical Society in Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod Society of lovers of antiquity.

Exhibits - copies of the photos from an album of Novgorod found by local historian and collector Y. A. Markitanov in the study of rare books and manuscripts of the State Hermitage Museum Research Library. The album contains 40 pictures with views of Novgorod of 1870-1880, including two pan and Commerce Sofia sides of the city. According to a dedicatory inscription, the album was given to Empress Maria Feodorovna by Novgorod Mayor Yakov Ivanovich Zhuravlev, presumably in the period from 1881 to 1883.

The author of the pictures is photographer N. P. Liadov, owned in 1870s a photo shop in Staraya Russa. Around since 1877 Lyadov began working in Novgorod, he makes views of the city and monuments commissioned by the Novgorod Regional Committee.

Copies of the photos from the album of the Empress were given to teh exhibition of the State Hermitage. Previously, these images were not published anywhere, not exhibited and will be presented to the public for the first time. For exposure images from an album are produced by photographer P. S. Demidov (St. Petersburg).

The exhibition will run until November 6, 2016.
