Interactive Olympiad for schoolchildren in the Presidential Library

From September 21 to December 2, 2018 the Presidential Library is holding the first stage of the annual interactive Olympiad “Russia in the Electronic World”, which assesses the knowledge of senior students in history, social studies and Russian language. This year the Olympiad, which has proved to be one of the major events aimed at schoolchildren, will be held for the ninth time.

From September 2018 to March 2019 pupils will carry out the tasks in history, social studies and Russian language. The Olympiad is divided into three stages, two of them will be held remotely. Following the tradition, at the last stage participants will have a chance to check their knowledge in person. The most gifted and widely read schoolchildren of St. Petersburg meet at Senate Square, 3, while students from other cities of Russia gather in the remote electronic reading rooms of the Presidential Library, which are currently open in 85 regions. Such format enables to cover the whole regional network of our country and even the near abroad. To participate in the Olympiad it is necessary to register on the website and get down to work.

Last year the Olympiad brought together over 5200 schoolchildren from all 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and seven foreign countries: Algeria, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. About 33,000 pupils of 10th–11th forms have joined the project since 2010.

To cope with the Olympiad tasks schoolchildren are actively using materials from the collections of the Presidential Library, which feature over 640,000 digital copies of printed and archival documents, audio and video recordings, abstracts of theses and other sources, which spotlight the centuries-long history of the Russian statehood, theory and practice of the law, and Russian language as the state language of Russia.

A competent jury, made up of prominent scholars and teachers of universities of the northern capital city, assesses the knowledge of pupils. Winners and prizewinners will enjoy the benefits while entering universities-partners of the Presidential Library (the list will be available on the Olympiad website in a while), what is more the Presidential Library will award them memorable prizes and presents.

Internet Olympiad for schoolchildren “Russia in the Electronic World” is a large-scale educational project, organized by the Presidential Library jointly with Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.
