Cinema club attendees to see film by Olga Kornienko marking the 900th anniversary of Yugra

13 December 2018

December 13, at 16:00, the regular cinema club meeting devoted to the 900th anniversary of Yugra will be held at the Presidential Library within the framework of the project “The History of the Russian Statehood in the History of its Regions”. The program includes the presentation of the book by Olga Kornienko “Vanishing Scenery: Behind the Scenes” (2017) and the documentary “Life of Shashupi, described by him”, shot by her in 2010. The Cinema Club is timed to the 900th anniversary of the first mention of Yugra in Russian annals; The anniversary date was established by the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The first dated mention of Yugra in the Russian chronicle is in the Tale of Bygone Years and is associated with the message of the Novgorod boyar Gyuryat Rogovich about the campaign of his warrior (boy) in Pechora to people who pay tribute to Novgorod. Thus, the lad went "to the land of Yugorsky. Yugra is people with an incomprehensible language, and they coexist with self-motivation in the northern countries”.

At the cinema club meeting, page 85 will be presented with this entry from the Laurentian list of The Tale of Bygone Years, an electronic copy of which is presented in the Presidential Library’s collection.

After the first mention, Yugra regularly appears on the pages of Russian chronicles as part of the Russian world, which later becomes part of the Russian state. The documentary works of Olga Kornienko can be considered a worthy continuation of the Yugra chronicles of past times, reflecting the state of affairs in this northern territory. The book reveals both the history of the state’s relations with small nations as a whole, and the history of individuals and clans living on the land of Yugra; Special attention is paid to the writer, poet, social activist of Yugra Yuri Vella, who wrote: “Study people associated with the land, for these deer-breeders, these hunters and fishermen are the gardeners of the world”.

Kornienko’s film “The Life of Shashupi, described by him” is a simple story by a Nenets reindeer herder, which reflects the history of all the northern peoples of the country. The film opens up the culture of Yugra, shows the world the unique territory of Siberia with its unique natural wealth and amazing people.

The meeting will be held in the multimedia hall of the Presidential Library at the address: Senate Square, 3.
