The Presidential Library to focus on Finland as part of Russia

On May 14, 2019 at 11:00 the Presidential Library is hosting a video lecture “Knowledge of Russia” on “The Grand Duchy of Finland as part of the Russian Empire” theme.

The Grand Duchy of Finland in 1809–1917 was the Governorate General, occupied the territory of modern Finland, part of the Karelian Isthmus and Northern Ladoga area. The territory has always enjoyed wide autonomy. However, the influence of the empire authorities on it should not be underestimated. Thus, the city of Helsinki (before the Helsingfors revolution) became the Finnish capital by decree of Alexander I in 1812.

Doctor of Historical Sciences, Leading Researcher of the St. Petersburg Institute of History, Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Finnish Historical Society Alexander Rupasov, Chief Researcher of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg Rodion Zelenkov, Researcher of the Saint-Petersburg University “Museum and Exhibition Center” Artyom Shilyaev, Cand. Sc. in History, head of the Laboratory for Problems of the Scandinavian countries and Finland Ilya Solomeshch attended the event.

Historians will focus on the Treaty of Fredrikshamn 1809, thanks to which Finland was part of the Russian Empire, the policy of Emperor Alexander I, the diplomatic activity of N. P. Rumyantsev, particular emphasis will be placed on the period of Russian-Finnish relations from the 1870s to the 1900s years.

Pupils of St. Petersburg schools, students and teachers of the College of Management and Economics "Alexander Lyceum", Institute of History, St. Petersburg State University, the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, Petrovsky College, HSE branch in St. Petersburg, International Banking Institute, Peter the Great Polytechnic University, North-West Branch of the Russian State University of Justice, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, St. Petersburg Academy of Law are invited to participate in the event.

The event will be livestreamed on the Presidential Library’s portal and in the official group of the Presidential Library in the VKontakte social network.
