26 September 2019

The Presidential Library has teamed up with the Altai Regional Center to present the interregional historical project “Mining and Metallurgical Industry in Russia, 18th - early 20th cc.”. On September 26, 2019 at 10 a.m. the event will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library’s portal, on Youtube channel and in the Presidential Library’s VKontakte official group.

The project "Mining and Metallurgical Industry in Russia, 18th - early 20th cc." was initiated by the Shishkov Altai Regional Research Library. In the 18th century Altai was the main region of non-ferrous metallurgy in Russia. Mining and metallurgical industry played a prominent role in the economy of the region itself.

The development of the mining and metallurgical industry spotlight the position of the Russian Empire during the period under review, when it became the leader among the European states in the smelting of cast iron, copper, silver and other metals.

The fate of the mining districts and their history are very important for understanding the socio-economic history of the whole country: metallurgical works and mines created new workers' settlements, which later developed into modern administrative and economic centers of the Urals and Siberia.

The Presidential Library willingly supported the project “Mining and Metallurgical Industry in Russia, 18th - early 20th cc.”. Its partners include scientific and cultural institutions of the Altai Republic, the Republic of Khakassia, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk regions.

The electronic collection on the history of the mining and metallurgical industry in the Russian Empire was built up as part of the collaborative work. It comprises about 600 items: scientific monographs and articles, archival and museum documents, unique photographs, historical, cartographic and visual materials.
