Plant Genetic Resources - the Basis of Food and Technological Security of Russia

The Presidential Library will host a video lecture at 9:30 on November 25, 2019. The event, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the Bureau of Applied Botany at the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Agriculture and State Property of the Russian Empire, was organized by the Federal Research Center Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR), which originates from the Bureau in applied botany.

The video lecture will include a series of lectures by famous scientists - academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as foreign experts. They will tell about the history of the study and use of the genetic resources of cultivated and wild plants, about the tasks of preserving this scientific heritage today, outline the prospects for the development of research in the field of plant sciences, and inform about the development of modern genetic technologies. The cooperation between the Presidential Library and the Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources has been developing since August 2017. During this time, the electronic collections of the largest digital repository was added with about 600 issues of the Lesnoy Journal, the first Russian periodical dedicated to the forest industry, published from 1833 to 1918. In addition, the Presidential Library's collections have been added with 135 volumes of the magazine of the Ministry of State Property of 1841-1918, as well as about 250 volumes of one of the oldest Russian special periodicals, Proceedings of the Free Economic Society of 1765-1915.

In 2017, at the exhibition “To Protect Nature Means to Protect Homeland": Marking the Year of Ecology in Russia”, the Presidential Library for the first time presented copies of seeds of cultivated plants from the collection of the famous scientist N. I. Vavilov. So far, this collection is one of the largest genetic banks of our planet and is a national treasure of Russia, it was saved in besieged Leningrad. This exposition features a video of the same name shown on the Presidential Library’s portal. Specialists of the Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, which is located in the territorial vicinity of the Presidential Library, took an active part in its creation.

Entrance to the video lecture "Plant Genetic Resources - the Basis of Food and Technological Security of Russia" is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport. The deadline for accepting the application is November 22, 2019 at 12:00.
