The Presidential Library’s webinar to consider the main battles of the Northern War

On February 12, 2020, at 10 a.m., the Presidential Library will host a thematic webinar “The Main Battles of the Northern War”, focusing on the materials which spotlight the main battles and the main events of the military conflict between Sweden and the coalition of Northern European states for the right to own Baltic lands, which lasted from 1700 until 1721 and went down in history as the Northern War or the Great Northern War.

At the webinar the audience will be introduced to monographs, dissertations, archival documents, some of which are available only in the electronic reading rooms of the Presidential Library.

The materials of the collections contain an illustrated edition of the famous historian, archivist and teacher Ivan Pavlovsky (1851-1922) “The Battle of Poltava on June 27, 1709 and its monuments”, prepared on the eve of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava; the collection “Vyborg Celebrations”, released in 1910 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the capture of Vyborg by Peter I, as well as the publication (1914–1918) timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Gangut, “Materials for the history of the Gangut operation”, spotlighting the battle, which became one of the key episodes of the Great Northern War.

Other materials are also available in the Presidential Library’s collections. They are plans for the old and new Poltava in 1709, included in the book by Sergei Ivanyuk “Poltava - “The Fortress is Void”: fortifications of the Poltava Fortress during the Great Northern War”; a copy of the drawing of the monument to Peter I in Poltava, which was installed at the place where the emperor was resting after the battle. There is a memorial inscription on the monument: “Here Peter I spent time after his labors on June 27, 1709. Reverence, the place is holy here”.

These and many other historical materials are presented in more than 1000 remote access centers opened in all constituent entities of the Russian Federation and 30 foreign countries. The electronic collections of the Presidential Library, numbering more than 770 thousand storage units, are available.

Webinars of various subjects are regularly held in the Presidential Library via video-conferencing mode. Thus, everyone has opportunity to discover the unique collections of the national electronic repository, get familiar with rare historical documents, publications and other materials that are little known to a wide audience.
