The Presidential Library to host Arctic Day

February 28, 2020 St. Petersburg (Senate Square, 3), will traditionally host "Arctic Day in the Presidential Library" annual conference. The event is held with the organizational support of the St. Petersburg Committee on Arctic Affairs.

The conference will begin at 10:00 and will be broadcasted live on the library’s portal in Live broadcasts section, in the official group on the VKontakte social network and on the institution’s YouTube channel.

Event participants, including video conferencing mode, will be students, graduate students and cadets of Russian higher and military educational institutions, as well as representatives of organizations involved in the study and development of the Arctic.

The main task of the Arctic Day in the Presidential Library is to promote Arctic expeditions, research on Arctic topics, draw attention to the problems of preserving the nature of this northern region and its distinctive culture, as well as the life support of the Arctic communities.

A plenary session where leading Russian scientists will consider key issues related to the formation of the strategic planning system of the Arctic zone of Russia, the historical and marine heritage of the region, the development of the Northern Sea Route, and the cultural traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic will open the conference.

Further, the Arctic Day at the Presidential Library will be continued with a series of breakout sessions, one of which will be devoted to scientific and technological progress in the Arctic, in particular, the expedition of the Arctic Floating University and its role in the study of this territory.

The section “Socio-economic development of territories” will focus on promotion of the Arctic tourism, which today is a new and promising scientific and practical direction that has a significant impact on the development of the territory in the context of globalization.

The section “Anthropology and Ethnology of the Arctic Territories” will focus on the study of the lifestyle of indigenous peoples as an important component in preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the northern regions, the main wealth of which are the inhabitants living there, as well as their knowledge and skills.

The Presidential Library will host a number of thematic events as part of the Arctic Day:

  • Video lecture of the Knowledge of Russia series devoted to Arctic and Antarctic research.
  • Cinema club meeting with the screening of the documentary “The Arctic. Space on Earth". The film, created by the NSU.LIFE studio of the Novosibirsk State University as part of the Arctic Floating University project, will feature summer expedition in 2017 to Franz Josef Land.
  • Meeting with the organizers of the exhibition “Pushing the limits of the world within the globe”: marking the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by the expedition of F. Bellingshausen and M. Lazarev” - by leading specialists of the Arctic and Antarctic Museum, the Central Naval Library, the M. Gorky Scientific Library of the St. Petersburg State University, JSC "Admiralty Shipyards". Guests of the meeting will have the opportunity to get familiar with the exhibits of the exhibition, among which are rare books, geographical maps, little-known photographs. Specialists will tell visitors about the modern exploration of Antarctica, about the history of Russian research on the southern continent, including extensive bibliography on Antarctica and international legislation regulating the nature of the use of these lands.

Admission to the Presidential Library is possible only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: media representatives go through the entrance № 2; participants and guests of the event go through the entrance № 1.
