The Presidential Library’s online cinema club meeting marking the Day of the victory of the Russian fleet in the Battle of Chesma

The Presidential Library’s cinema club meeting dedicated to the Victory Day of the Russian fleet over the Turkish in the Battle of Chesma in 1770 will be held on July 15, 2020 at 15:00. Viewers will be shown video works created by specialists of the multimedia historical park “Russia - My History”.

The cinema club meeting will be broadcasted on the Presidential Library’s portal, VKontakte social network and on the library’s YouTube channel.

The date, which has become so significant for the Russian fleet, appeared on the official calendar relatively recently. On July 10, 2012, the Federal Law “On the Days of Military Glory and Memorable Dates of Russia” was amended accordingly. The largest naval battle of the Russo-Turkish war in Chesma Bay, which occurred on June 25–26, 1770, predetermined the defeat of the Ottoman Empire. According to the famous historian Boris Kipnis, “The Chesma victory is the most heroic and brilliant victory of the Russian fleet. Chesma is the peak; it is a romantic impulse, an example of the collective action of sailors... ”

Viewers will see a video story that spotlights the history of the Battle of Chesma, about its heroes and their destinies, about the significance of this victory in the framework of the war with Turkey in 1768–1774. The military history specialist Yevgeny Guryev will comment those events. In second video, entitled “Chesma Church”, its abbot Archpriest Alexy Krylov will focus on the history of the temple, the Chesma palace and the Chesma cemetery, as well as the significance of the victory of the Russian fleet in the Battle of Chesma for the history of Russia.

Finally, a video work from the Central Naval Museum, revealing the museum’s exposition dedicated to the Battle of Chesma, will be shown.
