The Presidential Library’s webinar to spotlight the life and career of Anatoly Koni

Online webinar "Anatoly Fedorovich Koni" will be screened on the Presidential Library’s portal on September 30, 2020 at 10:00. The event will feature materials illustrating an outstanding judicial figure, legal scholar, brilliant orator and talented memoir writer.

Anatoly Fedorovich Koni graduated from the Law Faculty of Moscow University with a PhD in Law in 1865. His graduation essay was devoted to an issue that has not lost its relevance to this day. The digital copy of the work “On the Right of Necessary Defence: Reasoning of the student Anatoly Koni, written for taking degree of Candidate in Law" (1866) is available in the Presidential Library’s collections.

Anatoly Fedorovich's speeches invariably aroused public interest. The webinar will feature several collections of Koni's judicial speeches from 1868-1896, his discourse on the general features of judicial ethics, jury trials, testimony on which the charges were largely based, as well as legal notes and biographical sketches.

Anatoly Fedorovich left a large number of memories of literary, political and public figures with whom he met on his life path: Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky, Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov, Sergei Yulievich Witte. These memoirs are presented both in separate editions and as part of the memoir cycle "In a Journey Through Life" (1912-1929). Anatoly Fedorovich also knew and corresponded with writers: Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky, Chief Prosecutor of the Synod Konstantin Petrovich Pobedonostsev, leader of the "Union of October 17" parties Alexander Ivanovich Guchkov and many others.

Personal archive fund of A. F. Koni located in the State Archives of the Russian contains numerous documents about his official and social activities, manuscripts of works, and extensive correspondence.

These and many other materials are presented in more than 1000 remote access centers opened in all constituent entities of the Russian Federation and 30 foreign countries. The electronic collections of the Presidential Library, numbering about one million items, are available in full.

Webinars on various topics are regularly held in the Presidential Library in the form of video conferencing mode. With their help, one can discover unique collections of the national electronic depository, learn about rare historical documents, publications and other materials little-known to a wide audience.
